Ya nachal pisat' phonetikoi, no sdalsia srazu.
Mozhet kto perepechataet na Russian?

Preface

We all need "good" textures to work with. What is a "good" texture?
I've found it's the one that has enough detail for a medium-range shot
and doesn't create patterns over vast surfaces.
It's nice to have a photograph, but not always possible. Also, a photograph
that looks cool looses all charm when tiled x20, and it creates patterns.
There are things like Noise and Fractal Noise that are supposed to be
"random". Unfortunately, their "randomness" quickly become repetitive since
it's generated by the same algorythm.
Here we will use some "Scrawnypaws Secret Solutions" to quickly
make a Diffuse Brick texture which would cover the whole Moscow Kremlin
without repeating itself even once - to an untrained eye, of course.
Please, note - these are principles only that you are free too use and develope
further. This is NOT a ready commercial-quality texture - to make one is up to you.
Files used here are 3 years old and scaled down for the Web, but the principles have not aged.

Getting Started

We need a basic Layer texture that has some detail to it. Since we're not using Noise,
let's make Mother Nature work for us.
In this case I took watercolor paper and "washed" it with brownish color in several passes.
When scanned into Photoshop, it gave me a 2048 size file of a surface like this - ColorGrain_Detail_01.
I used this file ever since. The beauty of this is that it is really a random Grain.
Make it Seamless, of course, and Clone Stamp out any spots that look too prominent. Check for repeats,
when tiled, say x3. We want something that looks detailed up-close and rather uniform
from a distance.

Basic Texture

Open/Name Layer " Base"/
Select/Color Range/ Tolerance (set low, 15-35)/Picker click on darkest spot/
QickMask( to check if the selected pixels/grains are spaced enough;
if not, change the Tolerance some)/Exit QuickMask
Select/Transform Selection/Flip(or rotate 180) Horizontal (for example, we don't want
the pixels we're going to cut out to correspond to the existing grain- Random is our motto)
Copy/Paste/Name Step01

We don't need all of it, so another selection mask is needed. I use the Universal Blot for it -
it was created by multiple selected parts of a tree foliage, so it doesn't have a "hand-made"
aspect.
Open/Select All/Copy
go to our file, Paste
All Layers off (save the Blot one, and better have a white background - sometimes
selection tools select pixels partially, if on a transparent Background)
Select Color Range/Blot Layer off/go to Step01/move Selection where you fancy, Delete pixels,
repeat at will
Base Layer on/Image/Adjust/Hue-Saturation(change to your taste)
this gives Step_01 image (I added a black background to make it more visible, yours is without it)

Repeat - in our case 3 times (flipping Color Range Selection each time different way) - as many
times as you need.

This makes Steps 02 and 03.
All Layers on/Save - Step 04 image. This kind of texture can be
advanced to any degree of realism.

Seams

Make a seam B/W mask ( whatever pattern)
You can use a Stucco.jpeg that comes with MAX as a texture
Copy/Paste the Seam mask into the file/Stucco layer off
Select Color Range(black)/Stucco on, go to/Copy/Paste/Name "Seams"
Let's give the Seams some volume
All Layers off, Seams Mask on/Select Color Range, layer off/go to Seams/
Move Selection 1 pixel 45deg up-left/Select Inverse/
( here you may want to add Feather 0.5-1 pix to make it smooth)
/Image/Adjust/Brightness-Contrast (dark, this is the shade
of the seams)
Same for the highlight. Save.
You may want to do the same to Bricks, like in the Fake_Volume_01 image.
This principle applies to all digital painting.

Copy/Paste into Bricks File - here we are - Bricks Final pic. This is only a diffuse Map.
Using your own Universal Blot, you can make surfaces like this -Blotty_01_Detail,
combine them with seams and use as a Bump Masks. This brick, with a different seam
pattern was used in the "Tosca" Production Paintings.

Advanced Materials Secret Tip

Make it a Blend or use a Mix Map (renders slightly faster, but with Blend you control
other properties, like Gloss etc...). Make a second Brick diffuse (darker, different blots etc)
Make a Mixing Map using the Universal Blot technique.
Map with Box Gizmo (so your texture would have the same scale everywhere) and make the Box
at least 2 times bigger than your object. Tile the Base maps as much as needed. Tile the Mixing Map
ONLY BY ONE. This way, if you have several similar objects (walls etc)
you won't have to make a new and different material each time. Just move the Gizmo (up/down etc) - it will look different,
because there are NO REPEATS in the Blotty Mixing Map.

I use this mapping method now on the Crystal Key 2 (Adventure), where I model the main area. There is an
enormous quantity of railings, metal panels and such, so one simply can't have a lot of hi-res maps - MAX
chokes on it.
